Dog Training: Teach Your Dog To Be Obedient

There is nothing worse to encounter than an untrained dog. A dog that jumps up on you, soils the carpet, chews your slippers and digs holes in your back yard! There are actually people who put up with one or all of these unacceptable behaviors! But, you cannot blame the dog. They have not been properly trained. It is up to the owners to assure that their dog is properly trained.

Obedience training will cure these bad behaviors. Obedience training teaches the dog what his boundaries are and if he oversteps his bounds then he gets in trouble.

Some people would prefer that a professional train their dog. You may not believe that you have the skills to train your dog and need some extra help.

There are obedience classes for dogs around the country. Your local pet store or recreation center may offer classes. Or you may want to have a trainer come to your home.

Training should be fun. You do not have to mean and harsh with your dog. The purpose is to train your dog so that he exhibits socially acceptable behavior at all times.

You do need to be consistent. If your dog is known to have a chewing problem, he should be watched at all times. So when he does chew, he is scolded and told "no."

If you are enlisting the help of a trained professional you may want to interview them first. You will want to know there training style and exactly how they are going to train your dog. This is very important because when the trainer is not there, you are going to have to be the trainer and duplicate their efforts. You may not be comfortable with their particular style and end up training your dog differently. This will confuse the dog.

Referrals are important. It is suggested that you speak with your veterinarian or other people who have been through obedience training for referrals.

You may want to get some price quotes and terms of service. Some trainers will come to your house, others want you to come to them. Some training schools are like boot camp and the dog is there for a week or two.

Some dogs learn faster than others. Others believe it is not a question of intelligence of the dog, but the stubbornness! If you purchase a pet, you have made a commitment to that animal to provide the best possible, loving care. Make sure you take every opportunity to assure that your dog is well cared for and understands the rules. Otherwise, you and your dog will be miserable. You certainly want to look forward to a long, healthy relationship with your dog.
