Dog Training Tips

Similar to people, there is no perfect pets. All dogs need to be trained and they need to learn what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

If your dog wants to dig, they may be lonely and bored and may just need some extra attention. Some dogs may have a nutrient deficiency and may need to supplement their diet. They are turning to soil to get extra nutrients. You may want to check with your veterinarian to assure that your dog is in good health.

Training the dog to go to the bathroom outside can be difficult especially if you have just got a dog and they are older and never learned as a puppy. Puppies learn faster than older dogs. The best way to train a dog to do this is to reward them when they do go to the bathroom outside.

With dogs, you need to be consistent and repeat, repeat, repeat. Hopefully if you repeat the steps three to five times, your dog will grasp the behavior that you are trying to teach them.

Be direct in your communication and try to use only one word commands. If not, the dog will become very confused and frustrated. Be clear and concise in your communication with him.

You must have a relationship with the dog based on respect. When your dog acts out of line, you need to discipline him by pulling on the leash or saying, "no." This will teach your dog that you are the master and they are to obey your commands.

Dogs need love and objects to play with so that they are not bored. If you are having any behavioral problems with your dog, he needs to be crated while you are away. Once you are home, you can let him out of the crate and then observe his behavior.

Make sure you pay attention to him, and correct any misbehavior. Some dogs only exhibit the behavior when you are away because they are lonely or upset because you left them alone.

Be patient and teaching your dog commands takes time. You may need to practice and practice and practice some more. Keep in mind that dogs learn differently. Some dogs may learn rather quickly, while others need time and patience.

Keep in mind that you will have your dog for years to come so make sure he is exhibiting behavior that you and everyone in your household can live with. Otherwise, you will be having problems with your dog throughout his entire life.

Dogs are lovable, fun animals and they want to please you. You just need to let them know, what the boundaries are and what behaviors are acceptable.

Pet Connection: Teach your dog safe water play

Warm weather came early this year to much of the country, and that means lakes and rivers – and even swimming pools – are already being enjoyed by dogs who love to swim.
